Piranesi In Tokyo (1990)

Set in the round in a disused car showroom, a dense, proliferating mass of towers and walls was inspired by the impenetrable nature of Tokyo’s urban fabric. The audience sat around the edges looking in, as the block structures slowly revolved as they transformed, revealing hitherto unseen vistas into the centre. Circling the space on an overhead rail, a video camera transmitted the hidden views to the audience seated on the other side of the space.

Commissioned by 246 Tank and the UK90 Festival in Japan.
