Piranesi In Tokyo

Set in the round in a disused car showroom, a dense, proliferating mass of towers and walls was inspired by the impenetrable nature of Tokyo’s urban fabric. The audience sat around the edges looking in, as the block structures slowly revolved as they transformed, revealing hitherto unseen vistas into the centre. Circling the space on an overhead rail, a video camera transmitted the hidden views to the audience seated on all four sides of the space.

Music by Ichiyo Kishimoto

The performers are not actors, they’re a methodical, graceful construction crew of visual artists.  The emphasis is not on performance as product, but on the perilous process that yields the exhilaration of fashioning something much bigger than oneself.  The Italian master’s legendary Dark Prison of Rome never looked so intriguing, or moved so well.
